Hema Malini, the dream girl of millions of Indians was born on 16thOctober 1948 into a Tamil Iyenger family in Tiruchirappalli to parents V.S. Ramanujan Chakravarthy and Jaya Chakravarthy, a film producer. She completed her education from Andhra Mahila Sabha in Chennai despising all subjects except history.

Then she did ‘Andaaz’ !1971) and ‘Lal Patthar’ (1971). Her double role movie ‘Seeta aur Geeta’ is one of the best films of her career and won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 1970 she starred in ‘Dream Girl’. Her movies ‘Sanyasi’, ‘Dharmatma’ and ‘Pratigya’ were also successful.

But the biggest blockbuster of her career was ‘Sholay’ which showed her as a bubbly and lively girl ‘Basanti’. Her pair with Dharmendra was highly acclaimed and accepted due to the back to back hits that they delivered. They starred in twenty eight films together before marrying. In late 1970s she also did women centric movies ‘Kinara’ (1977) and ‘Meera’ (1979).

This beautiful lady was proposed by Bollywood actors ‘Sanjeev Kumar’ and ‘Jeetendra’ but after almost accepting Jeetendra’s proposal she backed out. The agony of her rejection haunted Sanjeev Kumar throughout his life and died unmarried in 1985 after getting addicted to alcohol. During the filming of ‘Sholay’ this Basanti fell in love with her co-star Dharmendra and eventually married him in 1980 after the couple converted to Islam.

Her marriage did not affect her work. She did films like ‘Kranti’, ‘ Naseeb’, ‘Satte Pe Satta’ and ‘Rajput’. Her marriage made their couple even more desirable and they were casted together in ‘Alibaba aur 40 chor’, ‘Bhagvat, ‘Samrat’ and ‘Razia Sultan’. She also starred in ‘Andha Kanoon’ in 1983 which was Rajnikant’s Bollywood debut.

Other multi starrers starring this beautiful woman were ‘Bhagvat’ and ‘Raj Tilak’. In addition to acting, she also directed a film ‘Dil Aashna Hai’ which failed commercially. After this she took a break from films in the 1990s and early 2000s but made a comeback with ‘Baghban’ (2003) opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She also played a cameo in 2004 in ‘Veer-Zara’. She also directed her second feature film ‘Tell Me O Khuda’ which released in 2011.

She has also been an active Bharatiya Janta Party member and was eventually elected to the Rajya Sabha. In March 2012 she was made general secretary of the BJP. She is also the brand ambassador of Kent, mineral water purifier system and also of Pothys, a textile showroom in Chennai.

Salman Khan Biography

Born on 27thDecember 1965, Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, popular as ‘Salman Khan’ is the eldest son of the Muslim screen writer Salim Khan and his Maratha Hindu wife Salma. Originally the inhabitants of Afghanistan, the family settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh before moving to Mumbai. Salman finished his schooling from St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai and so did his two siblings Arbaaz and Sohail. His love for his sisters Alvira and Arpita is quite evident through newspaper reports.

Salman Khan Biography This charitable man made his acting debut with a supporting role in the movie ‘Biwi ho to aisi’ in the year 1988 and the first leading role in Sooraj R. Bhanurekha Ganesan, better known as “Rekha” was born on 10th October 1954 to tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and telugu actress Pushpavalli. Her father refused to help in her upbringing and her unmarried mother was forced to take up her responsibility solely. The child star who appeared in the Telugu film ‘Rangula Ratnam’(1966) was compelled to leave school and take up a career in acting at an early age due to financial constraints.

The Indian-American astronaut Kalpana Chawala was born on July 1, 1961 in Karnal, Haryana in a middle class family. She did her schooling from Tagore Public School and acquired her bachelor of engineering degree in Aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College.

After joining the ‘NASA Astronaut Corps’ in March 1995, she was selected for her first flight in 1996. She was assigned her first space mission on November 19, 1997 as a part of six astronaut crew that flew the space shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. The first India born woman to fly in space travelled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth and spending more than 352 hours in the heavenly space. Her responsibility during this mission was to deploy the malfunctioned Spartan satellite.

The intelligent astronaut was appointed in technical positions in the astronaut office to work on the space station and her performance in the work was awarded by her peers. In 2000, she was selected for her second flight which got delayed due to technical problems such as the discovery of cracks in the space shuttle engine flow liners.

On 16th January, 2003 Chawla returned to space aboard Columbia on the STS-107 mission. The responsibilities given on her shoulders during her last mission included the microgravity experiments, for which the crew conducted approximately 80 experiments to study earth and space science, advanced technology development and astronaut health and safety.

She died on February 1, 2003 with the other six crew members when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas while entering the earth’s atmosphere. The STS-107 was thus the last mission of the second Indian woman to venture into space after Rakesh Sharma who flew in 1984 in a spacecraft. She was honored posthumously with the Congressional Space Medal of honor and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. She continues to live in our hearts.

Deepika Padukone, born on 5 January 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark to parents Prakash Padukone, a former badminton player of international repute and his wife, a travel agent moved to Bangalore along with her parents when she was eleven months old.

She acquired her first critical acclamation for the movie ‘Sadma’ in 1983 in which she played the role of a young girl suffering from amnesia. She also had the privilege of being nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award that year.

In 1986 she featured in ‘Nagina’ in an entirely different and challenging role as a woman who could take the form of a snake whenever she desired. Capturing the audience as a snake woman she went on to do bigger budget films like ‘Karma’ and ‘Aakhree Raasta’ in 1986.

Her next movie ‘Mr. India’ futher deepened her position in the industry establishing her as one of the top actresses. Her super hit ‘Chandi’ enchanted the audience and proved her status of a big star. In the same year she gave another hit ‘Chaalbaaz’ which won her the Filmfare Best Actress award. She was also seen in ‘Nigahen: Nagina Part II’.

Yash Chopra’s ‘Lamhe’ starring Sridevi in 1991 failed at the box office but is considered a classic today. The movie won the Filmfare Best Film Award and Sridevi won her second Filmfare Best Actress award. In 1992 she appeared in ‘Khuda Gawah’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Her Telugu skills won her the Filmfare Telugu Best Actress Award for Ram Gopal Verma’s Telugu movie ‘Kshana Kshanam’. The failure of ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron ka Raja’ in 1993 did not deter her demand as an actress. She next did ‘Gumraah’ (1993) and ‘Laadla’(1994). Her last major release was ‘Judaai’ in 1997.

In 1996 she married Boney Kapoor, a film producer and the couple has two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi. Since then this iconic actress has retired from her work. But she continues to appear in small roles. She is a member of the Board of directors at the Asian Academy of Film and Television. In 2009 she appeared on the reality show ’10 Ka Dum’ and has also walked the ramp a number of times in Lakme Fashion Weeks. Born on 5th August 1974, Kajol Devgan is from a film oriented family of Bengali-Marathi descent. Her mother Tanuja is an actress and her father Shomu Mukherjee was a film director and producer. Her younger sister Tanisha Mukherjee is also an actress. Mischievous and obstinate from an early age, this star was not affected by her parents’ split.

Kajol Biography She studied at the St Joseph Convent boarding school in Panchgani which offered her ample extracurricular activities. Her passion for reading fiction helped her through the bad moments of her life. She began working for Rahul Rawail’s film ‘Bekhudi’ at the age of sixteen and dropped out of school to pursue acting as a career.

Her performance in her film which was a commercial failure gave her ‘Baazigar’ (1993) which was declared a success. She won her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination for the movie ‘Yeh Dillagi’.

In 1995, she acted opposite Ajay Devgan in two unsuccessful films ‘Hulchul’ and ‘Gundaraj’. Playing a mean and negative role in her 1997 hit ‘Gupt: The Hidden Truth’ was difficult was her but was a turning point in her career. She won the Filmfare award for Best Negative role.

Her romantic comedy ‘Ishq’ was again a commercial success. In 1998 she appeared in her first hit of the year ‘Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya’ and then in ‘Dushman’ which received critical appreciations and her first Screen Award for Best Actress.

Her biggest success that year was Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ with Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee which was a blockbuster in India and overseas and fetched her Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 1999 her ‘Dil Kya kare’ was a failure but her next ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ was one of the few women centered films which were a success.

In 2000 after the failure of ‘Raju Chacha’ and ‘Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi’, she appeared in ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ which was a blockbuster in India. After this she became more selective about her movies to concentrate on her married life with Ajay Devgan whom she married in 1999 after much criticism about their pair.

She appeared in ‘Fanaa’ in 2006 which was again a super hit and won her a fourth Filmfare Best Actress award. In 2008 she was honored with the ‘Karamveer Puraskar’ for her social services. Her next was Devgan’s directorial debut ‘U Me aur Hum’ which did moderately at the box office but won Kajol critical praises for her role as an Alzheimer diseased woman.

Concerned about the literacy rate, she launched ‘Shiksha’ to support children’s education. In 2010, she did ‘My Name is Khan’ with Shahrukh khan’ which was an international success. She next did ‘We Are Family’ which did moderately. Her last venture of the year was ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ which was a critical and commercial failure. In 2003, she gave birth to a daughter Nysa and in 2010 to a son, Yug. She was appointed the brand ambassador of Pratham, a charity organization in 2012.
