John Abraham Biography
John Abraham in Christian and Farhan Abraham in Parsi is the hottest actor of the Hindi cinema. He was born on 17th December 1972 to a Malayali father who is an architect and Parsi mother. He also has a younger brother, Alan.
He did his schooling from Bombay Scottish School, Mahim in Mumbai and acquired a bachelor’s degree in economics from Jai Hind College and did his MBA from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies. He also received an MMS from Mumbai Educational Trust (MET).
His modeling career started with his appearance in the Punjabi singer Jazzy’s music video ‘Surma’. Later he joined the media firm Time & Space media Entertainment Promotions Ltd. which closed due to financial problems.
He then worked as a media planner for Enterprises-Nexus. Then came the turning point in 1999 when he won the Gladrags Manhunt contest and went to the Philippines for modeling. He also modeled in London, Hong Kong and New York City.
The commercials and music videos offered to him inspired him to improve his acting skills and he joined the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting laboratory and completed an acting course. He then made his acting debut with ‘ Jism’ in 2003 which was termed as an above average movie at the box office.
He next appeared in a paranormal thriller ‘Saaya’ (2003), Pooja Bhatt’s directorial debut ‘Paap’ (2004) and Ahmed Khan’s ‘Lakeer’ in 2004. In 2004, he was seen in ‘Dhoom’ which became the highest grossing film of that year.
2005 started with ‘Kaal’ and the comedy ‘Garam Masala’, both of which did well at the box office. He also did a role in the Canadian film maker Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ which was popular internationally and was also nominated for the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Then in 2006 he performed at the ‘Rockstars Concert’ along with actors Salman Khan, Zayed Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol, Shahid Kapoor and Mallika Sherawat.
He also starred in ‘Zinda’, ‘Taxi No 9211’, ‘Babul’ and ‘Kabul Express’ which were considerably successful. In 2007, he did Nikhil Advani’s ‘Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love’ which did not do well at the box office. In the same year he was also seen in the movies ‘No smoking’ and sports film ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’.
In 2008 his only release was ‘Dostana’ along with Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra which was a super hit. In 2009, he appeared in Yash Raj Films’ ‘New York’ which did moderately at the box office. In 2010 he starred in ‘Aashayein’ and ‘ Jhootha Hi Sahi’. His ‘Desi Boyzz’ in 2011 with Akshay Kumar was a commercial hit and did well at the box office.
He ended his nine year relationship with actress Bipasha Basu in 2011 shocking the industry. In 2012, he made his directorial debut with the Ayushmann starrer ‘Vicky Donor’ which was a commercial and critical hit and received positive response. He also appeared in ‘Housefull 2’. The actor is currently working on his second production ‘Hamara Bajaj’ which is to go on floors in 2013.
He is now in a relationship with Priya Runchal, an NRI financial analyst and investment banker from USA. He is also an active PETA member and in 2009 led a group of Indian celebrities in the Mumbai marathon, an event to benefit the United Way.
