Biography – Indian Entrepreneurs – Dr. K. Anji Reddy

Dr. K. Anji Reddy Childhood/Education – Dr Kallam Anji Reddy was born in 1940 in Tadepalli region of Guntur district. He has done B.Sc in Pharmaceuticals and Fine chemicals from Bombay University. Thereafter he did his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the National Chemical Laboratory in 1969. From 1969 to 1975, he had served in PSU Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited. He founded Uniloids Ltd and served as a Managing Director from 1976 to 1980. He also served as managing director of Standard Organics Limited from 1980 to 1984.

Work Life – Dr. K. Anji Reddy established Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in 1984 and soon the company had registered phenomenal growth in the Indian Pharmaceutical industry. It led to the transformation of Indian bulk drug industry from import-dependent to self-reliant and then into the export-oriented industry within a span of one decade. Dr. Reddy’s was the first company to start drug discovery research in India in 1993. It was the first Asian pharmaceutical company to list on NYSE in 2001 that do not belong to Japan. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories became the second largest pharmaceutical company of India in 2005.

Achievements – Dr Reddy’s is the founder and the chairman of Dr Reddy’s Group of Companies. He has been awarded with Padma Shri in 2001 and has successfully proven as a pioneer in the pharmaceutical research in India. Apart from his business achievements, Dr Reddy also did great job as a philanthropist. He founded Dr. Reddy’s Foundation for Human & Social Development that is working actively to bring about sustainable development.

Dr. K. Anji Reddy is a proud recipient of many awards and honours such as Sir PC Ray award (in 1984 and 1992); FAPA-Ishidate Award for Pharmaceutical Research in 1998; Businessman of the Year in 2001; Achiever of the Year award in the year 2000, the ‘Hall of Fame’ award in 2005 for his remarkable contribution to the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.
