Salma Hayek Biography
Salma Hayek Jimenez was born in Coatzacoalcoz, Veracruz, Mexico on 2nd September 1966 to parents Diana Jimenez Medina, an opera singer and Sami Hayek Dominguez, an oil company executive. Her name ‘Salma’ is an Arabic word for ‘safe’. Her devoted Catholic family sent her to the Academy Of The Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana at the age of twelve where she was diagnosed as being dyslexic.
She attended college in Mexico City, where she studied International relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana. She made her debut at the age of 23 with the movie ‘Teresa’ (1989) which gave her instant popularity and star status in Mexico. In 1994, her movie ‘El Callejon de los Milagros’ which won many awards and gave her a nomination for an Ariel Award. Her dyslexic deformity limited her fluency in the English language.
This Mexican star moved to Los Angeles, California in 1991 to study acting under Stella Adler. Robert Rodriguez and his director wife Elizabeth Avellan gave Hayek a starring role in ‘Desperado’ (1995) and following this she did a brief role with a table top snake dance in ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’. She also performed a song in Desperado showcasing her different abilities. In 1997, she starred opposite Matthew Perry in the romantic comedy ‘Fools Rush In’.
In 1999, two roles crossed her road. She did Will Smith’s ‘Wild Wild West’ and did a supporting role in Kevin Smith’s ‘Dogma’. In 2000, she did a small role in ‘Traffic’. Around this year, she founded her film production Company ‘Ventanarosa’. She debuted as a director with 1999’s El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba. The 2001 feature film ‘In the Time of the Butterflies’ saw her as one of the Mirabal sisters who opposed the Dominican dictator.
Released in 2002, her co-produced and acted movie ‘Frida’ won her a Best Actress Academy Awards nomination for her performance. In 2003, she directed and produced ‘The Maldonado Miracle’ which won her a daytime Emmy Award. From 2006 to 2010, she was the executive producer of ‘Ugly Betty’, a television series which aired around the world. She also gues starred in this television serial as Sofia Reyes, a magazine editor.
This won a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Series in 2007. In 2007, she finalized the negotiations with MGM to become the CEO of her own Latin themed film production company. She also starred in ‘Grown ups’ as the wife of Adam Sandler and his insistence gave her voice to the love interest of Puss in the movie ‘Puss in Boots’.
Apart from being an actor, director and producer, this exceptionally talented lady is also involved in promotional work. She has been a spokesperson for Avon Cosmetics since 2004. In 2001, she modeled for Chopard and in 2006 Campari Adverts. In 2011, she launched her own line of cosmetics, skincare and haircare products called the ‘Nuance’ by Salma Hayek.
Her brother is a designer with big clients like Louis Vuitton, Brad pitt and the Mexican government. In 2007, she made the news of her engagement to French billionaire PPR CEO Francois Henry Pinnault and her pregnancy public. On 21st September 2007, she gave birth to daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault. The couple was married in 2009 in Paris and remarried in Venice. Her philanthropic work includes increasing awareness on violence against women and discrimination against immigrants.
