Sridevi was born on 13th august 1963 in Tamil Nadu to a lawyer father Ayyapan and mother Rajeswari. She started her acting career as a child actor in the Tamil movie ‘Kandan Karunai’ in 1967 and then on acted in many Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and kannada movies as the lead actress.

Sridevi Biography Her debut as the principal heroin came with the movie ‘Moondru Mudichu’ opposite Rajnikant and Kamal Hasan. She also has Telugu movies offered to her in addition to Tamil. Most of her Telugu movies were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. She debuted in Hindi cinema also as a child artist in ‘Julie’ (1975).

Then in 1979 she did her debut as an adult actress in ‘Solva Sawan’ which was a remake of her own movie ’16 Vayathinile’ but was a commercial failure. Her second Hindi film ‘Himmatwala’ (1983) was a big success and established her position in the Hindi film industry.

Her pairing with Jeetendra and the songs and trademark Southern style dances was popular and became a rage. She acquired her first critical acclamation for the movie ‘Sadma’ in 1983 in which she played the role of a young girl suffering from amnesia. She also had the privilege of being nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award that year.

In 1986 she featured in ‘Nagina’ in an entirely different and challenging role as a woman who could take the form of a snake whenever she desired. Capturing the audience as a snake woman she went on to do bigger budget films like ‘Karma’ and ‘Aakhree Raasta’ in 1986.

Her next movie ‘Mr. India’ futher deepened her position in the industry establishing her as one of the top actresses. Her super hit ‘Chandi’ enchanted the audience and proved her status of a big star. In the same year she gave another hit ‘Chaalbaaz’ which won her the Filmfare Best Actress award. She was also seen in ‘Nigahen: Nagina Part II’.

Yash Chopra’s ‘Lamhe’ starring Sridevi in 1991 failed at the box office but is considered a classic today. The movie won the Filmfare Best Film Award and Sridevi won her second Filmfare Best Actress award. In 1992 she appeared in ‘Khuda Gawah’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Her Telugu skills won her the Filmfare Telugu Best Actress Award for Ram Gopal Verma’s Telugu movie ‘Kshana Kshanam’. The failure of ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron ka Raja’ in 1993 did not deter her demand as an actress. She next did ‘Gumraah’ (1993) and ‘Laadla’(1994). Her last major release was ‘Judaai’ in 1997.

In 1996 she married Boney Kapoor, a film producer and the couple has two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi. Since then this iconic actress has retired from her work. But she continues to appear in small roles. She is a member of the Board of directors at the Asian Academy of Film and Television. In 2009 she appeared on the reality show ’10 Ka Dum’ and has also walked the ramp a number of times in Lakme Fashion Weeks. In 2011 she announced her comeback delighting her numerous fans and she is currently working on a new film ‘English Vinglish’.
